Technology On Sprint

Wednesday, May 28, 2008

Sprint operates a nationwide network with CDMA technology in the PCS (1900 MHz) band, in addition to a nationwide iDEN network acquired during Sprint's merger with Nextel in August 2005. Sprint also offers high-speed EVDO Revison A data technology in most areas. Sprint is also planning a gradual transition of its iDEN network to CDMA technology, while also building a separate WiMAX data network offering faster speeds than EVDO Rev.

The Sprint Power VisionSM Network provides rich, clear visuals, high–quality sound and broadband–like speed on your wireless phone. Jason and Keith talk about the Microsoft/Yahoo breakup, Sprint and Clearwire getting cozy (but Sprint possibly dumping Nextel), and Google whining about Verizon. Sprint also has been in an on-again, off-again business relationship with Clearwire on WiMax.

In 2005, the companies formed a joint venture known as Pivot that would allow cable operators to resell Sprint's wireless service as part of their bundle of services that includes broadband, TV, and home phone service. The companies were also supposedly working to integrate Sprint's wireless service with the cable services to extend the content and services cable offered to a wireless device.

Instead of simply reselling Sprint's service, Comcast will own the relationship with the customer and will be able to develop services on the 3G network as well as Clearwire's new 4G network that can leverage Comcast's services and content.
